Description

No. 7 Timber Street is a house, now used as a store-room, dating from 1675. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone, rendered, with a stone slate roof and stands two storeys tall. The front facing the Post Office yard features a ground floor door with moulded jambs and a Tudor arched head. Carved into the very deep lintel is a tressure that contains the initials 'GSB' and the date '1675'. There is a double chamfered mullioned window with five lights, a king mullion, and a hood mould that rises above the door. The first floor has a double chamfered cross window. The right-hand return wall is rendered but still shows remnants of an arch-headed fireplace that rests on corbels at the first floor level. The front facing Timber Street has a doorway that may have been made from a chamfered window. A part of the string course is interrupted by a later shop window to the right, and above this is a cross window without mullions. The building's plan suggests a baffle entrance, although the service end has been demolished.
