Description

The Rose and Crown is a former public house, now used as a warehouse, dating from the mid-17th century. It is a stone building with a rendered exterior and a stone slate roof. The structure features a two-storey hall and projecting cross-wings, forming a 'U' shaped plan that faces east.

The east front showcases three gables, with some original windows still in place, although the ground floor windows have been significantly altered. The first-floor window in the central hall chamber is a stepped double chamfered mullioned window with six lights and four panes. This window is flanked by double chamfered mullioned and transomed windows with ten lights in the cross-wings. All windows are adorned with string courses above and coped gables with kneelers.

On the west elevation of the south wing, there is a five-light chamfered mullioned window on the first floor, although one light is blocked. The gable of the north wing features a rainwater spout and a semi-circular plaque that reads 'TJD 189O', marking the 21st birthday of Thomas John Dobson, and it faces into Dobson's yard. The wings maintain original lateral external stacks.

Inside, the building has been largely gutted, and part of the rear wall has been rebuilt in brick. There is a fireplace with broadly chamfered surrounds and simple stops on the jambs, one of which has a fine depressed Tudor arch with spandrels. The roofs are supported by King post trusses.
