Description

SD 92NW TODMORDEN (former M.B.) UPPER LANE SD 945260

2/310 Lower Winsley Farmhouse

G.V. II

House. Dated 1636. Large dressed stone, stone slate roof. 2 storeys. South front 3 room plan. Quoins, coped gables with kneelers. Housebody to centre has 2-light fire-window and altered window. Over are 2 windows with chamfered surrounds formerly of 2 lights. Dressed stack to ridge over fire-window. Attached to left is single-cell with chamfered window and doorway with rough dressed lintel and composite jambs. Over is 4-light chamfered window (blocked). Attached to right hand end, single cell with leanto porch C20, next to window with chamfered surround. Over is 4-light chamfered mullioned window (lacking mullions). Rear preserves chamfered mullioned window of 2 lights and altered original doorway with date on heavy square lintel set within a tressure. This originally would have formed a through-passage plan. There is a distinct break between each of the 3 cells. It would appear that the housebody was constructed first to provide immediate accommodation then the other 2 rooms were added soon after to either end, as all the stonework and window details are contemporary with each other. The interior of the eastern room has finely reeded spine-beams and floor joists.
