Description
Lower Winsley Farmhouse is a house dated 1636, built from large dressed stone with a stone slate roof. It has two storeys and a south front featuring a three-room plan. The building has quoins and coped gables with kneelers. The central housebody includes a two-light fire-window and an altered window above, flanked by two windows with chamfered surrounds that were originally two lights. There is a dressed stack at the ridge over the fire-window.
To the left, there is a single-cell section with a chamfered window and a doorway that has a rough dressed lintel and composite jambs. Above this is a blocked four-light chamfered window. To the right, there is another single-cell section with a 20th-century lean-to porch next to a window with a chamfered surround. Above this is a four-light chamfered mullioned window that is missing its mullions.
At the rear, the house retains a chamfered mullioned window of two lights and an altered original doorway featuring a date on a heavy square lintel set within a tressure. This doorway would have originally formed a through-passage plan. There is a noticeable break between each of the three cells, suggesting that the housebody was built first for immediate accommodation, followed by the addition of the two end rooms, as all the stonework and window details appear to be contemporary. Inside the eastern room, there are finely reeded spine-beams and floor joists.
