Description
Nos. 1, 5, 7, and 9 Machpelah Yard is a tenement block built around 1805, located at the rear of Nos. 10, 12, and 14 Machpelah. The building has 3½ storeys and is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof. At right angles to No. 12 Machpelah, there is a cottage featuring a doorway with tie-stone jambs and a large 2-light sashed window to the left, with a similar window above it on the first floor. A dog-leg cantilevered stair provides access to the third-floor cottages, which have galleries on three sides, each with similar doorways and 2-light flat-faced mullioned windows, with matching windows above for the attic bedrooms. Notably, No. 5 has a Venetian window in the attic that retains small leaded lights in the central window.
