Description
Machpelah Works is a former fustian warehouse, built around 1840 and later used as a cabinet-maker’s workshop. The building is constructed of dressed stone with a stone slate roof. The front facade is three stories high, while the rear, facing the canal, rises four stories. Continuous sill bands run across each floor. The symmetrical front has seven bays. The original doorway features an architrave and Tudor arched lintel, and retains its original six-panelled door and panelled fanlight. Windows have skewback lintels, and most windows on the first and second floors retain their original 30-pane glazing, with central six-pane swivel openers. An eaves cornice runs along the top. An addition of two single-story bays in a matching style, with a cyma moulded cornice and low-parapet, is attached to the left-hand return wall. The rear of the building mirrors the front with similar fenestration. Gable stacks are visible on the return walls, which also have two bays of similar windows. The building is documented in C. Spencer’s "Hebden Bridge History Trail."
