Description

Hebden Bridge Picture House and attached flanking shops is a cinema built between 1919 and 1921, with minor alterations made in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of brick, with coursed rubble and an ashlar facade, topped with slate roofs.

The street front features a recessed central section accessed by a flight of 11 steps. This section is flanked by single giant Doric columns and pilasters that support a deep entablature. The entrance showcases original glazed tiles and glazed doors with contemporary frames. To the left, there is an original canted wooden box office with its original glazing. The central section is topped with an entablature that extends over the projecting side wings, which have rusticated quoins at the corners. Each side wing contains a shop with contemporary shopfronts, each featuring a recessed central doorway, a row of overlights, and fascia boards. Above each shopfront are three windows, with the central window having an ashlar surround and pediment. The entire facade is capped by a deep plain parapet, and the recessed central section originally featured a flagpole.

Inside, the original foyer retains its original panelling, coved and decorated plaster ceiling, and doors. An original staircase on the left leads to a balcony above, which has doorways and doorcases. The auditorium preserves much of its original Classical style decoration, with walls adorned with panels and pilaster strips, and a curved ceiling featuring simple panel decoration. The proscenium has panelled sides and a moulded frame, although the lower sections have been removed. An orchestra pit is located in front of the stage, and the curved balcony has a panelled facade. The seats have been replaced with 1930s seating from another cinema.
