Description

The White Lion Fisheries and attached barn is a building located in Hebden Bridge, originally a house that has been converted into a flat and shop. It dates from the late 17th century, with alterations made in the mid 19th century and late 20th century, and the barn was added in the late 18th century. The structure is made of hammer-dressed stone and features a stone slate roof.

This L-shaped group has two and a half storeys, with gable fronts facing the road. The front has a five-light flat-faced mullioned window that has been altered to create two wide lights. There is a doorway with a depressed Tudor arched lintel, which has a chamfered surround, and a two-light window with a chamfered surround above it on the first floor. The attic contains flat-faced mullioned windows with two lights and four lights.

To the right of the house is the barn, which features a tall, wide semi-circular arched cart entry with tie-stone jambs. The left-hand return wall of the barn has a blocked two-light chamfered mullioned window, with a four-light chamfered mullioned window above it on the first floor that retains only the king mullion. A stone staircase leads to the first-floor doorway, which has monolithic jambs. The rear of the barn includes a semi-circular cart entry, a mistal doorway with tie-stone jambs, and six rectangular ventilators with chamfered surrounds, three of which are blocked. The house has one stack at the ridge. Inside the shop, there is a large stop-chamfered spine beam. The building is illustrated in C. Spencer's "Hebden Bridge History Trail."
