Description
Bridge Mill, dating from around 1830, is a former mill that has been converted into shops, a restaurant, and craft workshops. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. The building stands 3½ storeys tall and has a double-pile range under a two-span roof that faces the river. The elevation towards the road includes a canted end that projects forward, which may predate the main range. This elevation consists of four bays, with one bay and two bays of windows that have tie-stone jambs and projecting sill bands.
To the right, a return section with nine bays is part of the double-pile range, featuring similar windows with projecting sills but lacking the sill band. At the junction with the second range of the double-pile, there is a two-bay block that has segmental arched entries for shops. The second range has a four-bay return, with a circular chimney made of pitch-faced stone on the river elevation.
The rear range has three bays and four bays, with windows that feature heavy lintels on the ground floor and shallower lintels on the upper floors, all with tie-stone jambs. One window on the second floor retains its original small-paned glazing, while the rest are glazed in a style that matches the upper casement. The building also retains the housing for the waterwheel and its tail-race. Historically, this site was a corn mill and served as the manorial mill for Wadsworth.
