Description

Hebden Bridge Signal Box is a two-storey structure built from brick laid in English Garden Wall bond, with timber weather-boarding and a Welsh slate roof. The ground floor is made of brick, while the upper floor features horizontal boarding and a gabled roof. The first-floor operating room has continuous glazing on the north side, which faces the tracks, and on the front half of the gable ends. The windows are made of uPVC but mimic the original design, appearing as 10 sashes divided by heavier mullions into a 3 - 4 - 3 arrangement, with each sash containing four panes. Below the sashes is a continuous row of 20 panes, and this glazing pattern continues around the front half of the gable ends. Each gable has a separate four-pane window near the top, and the oversailing roof is finished with plain bargeboards topped with spear-point finials. The door to the operating room is centrally located on the east gable and is accessed by a modern flight of steel steps. To the left of the door, there is a small timber-clad projection that is a modern addition for a toilet.

The ground floor features a simple plinth and three segmentally-arched windows facing the tracks, with a fourth window at the west end. The similarly arched doorway is located on the east gable. Above the front ground-floor windows is a name board from the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway (L&YR) that reads 'Hebden Bridge'.

Inside, the signal box retains its original L&YR lever frame, which has 36 levers, along with two additional levers added after 1905. It also includes a three-position Absolute Block Instrument and a Block Bell, both of which are from the L&YR period.
