Description
May Royd is an early 17th-century hall-and-cross-wing house constructed from large dressed stone, with a later 5-bay wing added to the south in the early 19th century, also in dressed stone with a punched margin. The building appears as four main linear divisions. The gable of the 19th-century wing features a plinth, eaves band, a coped gable, and a stack. It has two bays of blind windows on each floor. The hall range is set back and shows some 19th-century alterations to the doorway and a 3-light mullioned window above. A break in the stonework reveals a recessed tablet with a moulded surround; the hall window has 5 lights with arched heads and renewed mullions. A 6-light mullioned and transomed window sits above, while a half-bay projects forward with a 6-light mullioned and transomed window to the first floor, positioned at the corner of the wing. This wing retains its original fenestration of 12-light, double-chamfered mullioned and transomed windows on both floors, with a columbarium at the apex. A cavetto hoodmould runs continuously over the ground-floor window. The left return wall of the 19th-century wing has 5 bays of 12-paned sash windows on each floor. The right-hand wall of the cross wing has a tall stair window. The rear elevation has similar fenestration. The interior of the hall features oak linenfold panelling and an impressive Tudor arched fireplace with corbelled jambs, all dating to the early 19th century.
