Description

This large aisled barn, dating from the late 16th century, is located 10 meters northwest of Greenwood Lee in Heptonstall. It is constructed from finely dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. The north entrance front has a tall cart entry with a broad chamfered surround, flanked by mistal doorways at either end that have Tudor arched lintels and broad stop-chamfered surrounds. There are also some small rectangular ventilators. The gables are coped with kneelers and have finely sculpted crocketed finials, along with deeply chamfered rectangular ventilators.

On the south entrance front, there is a cobbled yard adjacent to the house. It features a tall gabled cart entry with a segmental arch, skewbacks, and a chamfered surround. There is a columbarium with a cyma moulded cornice and a circular owlhole at the apex. The gable is coped with kneelers and a crocketed finial topped with a carved ball. Similar Tudor arched mistal doorways are located on either side.

Inside, the barn consists of six bays with a fine timber frame. The posts rest on tall stylobats and are connected to the tie-beam and arcade plates by curved braces. The roof features king post trusses with concave queen struts and similar curved braces supporting the aisle tie. This barn is recognized as one of the finest aisled barns in the Upper Calder Valley.
