Description
Gibson's Mill Cottages is a row of five cottages located in Heptonstall, built in the early 19th century, with the first cottage added shortly afterwards. The cottages are constructed from watershot masonry and feature a stone slate roof, rising to two storeys. Quoins indicate the division between the first two cottages.
Cottage No. 1 has a doorway with monolithic jambs positioned to the right of a square window, which has plain stone surrounds and an additional light added between. Above, there is a three-light flat faced mullioned window on the first floor, with the central light being wider for a sash window. Cottages Nos. 2 to 5 have doorways with tie-stone jambs. Cottages 2 and 3 each feature windows with plain stone surrounds that originally had two square lights, now altered to casements. Cottages 4 and 5 have three-light flat faced mullioned windows with slightly projecting sills on the ground floor and four lights on the first floor, with No. 4 having a blocked light.
The row has three stacks along the ridge, and No. 1 includes a flue that exits horizontally and enters the first floor of the adjacent Gibson Mill, utilizing the corner chimney of the mill. The rear of the cottages features small single lights and two-light flat faced mullioned windows.
