Description
Gibson's Mill Cottages is a small single-cell cottage located next to a toll bridge, likely serving as the toll-keeper's house. It dates from the early 19th century and features quoins, watershot masonry, and a stone slate roof. The cottage has a similar character to Nos. 4 and 5 Gibson's Mill Cottages, which it faces across the former mill yard leading to Gibson Mill.
The front of the cottage includes a three-light flat-faced mullioned window with plain stone surrounds and a projecting sill to the left of the doorway, which has a sill-tie. Above this, there is a four-light window on the first floor. A gable stack is positioned on the left-hand return wall, which has an outshut attached that includes two doorways. The rear of the cottage backs onto the river and features a two-light window on the ground floor. On the right-hand return wall, there is a doorway with tie-stone jambs leading to the first floor, accessed by a flight of five stone steps. This doorway is adjacent to the parapet of the toll bridge. A wooden plaque is affixed to the wall, recording the various tolls.
