Description
This is a late 17th or early 18th century farmhouse, originally known as Priest’s Earth, with an attached barn. The farmhouse is constructed of well-coursed dressed stone with a stone slate roof. It has two storeys and originally a two-cell plan with a rear baffle entry. The south front features a 4-light double chamfered mullioned window, a 5-light chamfered mullioned window above it, an inserted doorway with tie-stone jambs, a 7-light window with a king mullion (5 + 2), a 3-light single chamfered window, and a 7-light window to the first floor. Some of these windows are missing mullions. The gables are coped with kneelers and chimney stacks. The right-hand return wall has a double plinth. At the rear, there's an original doorway with a large lintel and a stop-chamfered surround. An added cell is attached to the right side, featuring a former 3-light window on each floor. A 4-bay barn is attached, with a queen-post roof and a semi-circular arched cart entry with a chamfered surround. A mistal doorway to the right-hand end has a broad stop-chamfered surround. Inside the farmhouse, a firescreen made from an old panelled pew from Heptonstall Old Church serves as a partition; the pew has a brass plate inscribed "This Pew belongeth converted to a DICK BOOTH MOULD GRAIN HEPTONSTALL 1800 settle." A segmental arched fireplace with a lintel carried on corbels has a cyma moulded surround and shelf.
