Description
This is an early 16th-century timber-framed barn, encased in stone, located 15 meters north of Lower Hathershelf in Luddendenfoot, Halifax. The barn likely dates from the late 16th or early 17th century and is probably contemporary with the cross-wing at Lower Hathershelf. It features large dressed stone and has a T-shaped plan to the east. The barn includes wide cart entries that reach full height, which may have been altered. The side walls contain deeply chamfered arrow slit ventilators, and the mistal doorways at the lower end (east) have a deeply chamfered surround. The wide gables are coped with kneelers, and the ventilators are arranged in a pattern of 2 over 3 over 7.
Inside, the barn consists of a 5-bay double-aisled structure supported by king post trusses with single 'V' struts. The posts rest on stylobats and are connected to the tie-beam and arcade plate with curving braces. There are wall ties, and the end truss is flush with the external stone wall. This barn is notable for its magnificent and virtually unaltered interior, making it a prominent feature in the landscape.
