Description

Flat Head is a house dated 1627, with an added cross-wing dated 1706, located on Cross Wells Road in Ripponden. The building features thin coursed hammer dressed stone and ashlar quoins on the wing, topped with a stone slate roof. Originally designed as a three-room through-passage hall-and-cross-wing plan, it has lost its service end, which has been demolished.

The south front showcases double chamfered mullioned windows. The west wing includes a prominent five-light window with a hoodmould and decorated stops, along with a two-over-five-light stepped window in the gable, which also has a hoodmould with stops inscribed "IMG" and "1706". The housebody is slightly set back and has a former five-light window with a three-light window above it on the first floor, and a two-light fire-window. To the right, there is a porch featuring a Tudor arched doorway with a cyma moulded surround and shields in the spandrels. The gable is coped with kneelers.

The inner doorway has a Tudor arched design with a lintel inscribed "R1627W" set within a tressure, leading into the through-passage. The north door mirrors this design, with a lintel inscribed "IMC 1669", and is protected by an open porch of unique design, supported by an octagonal column and featuring a three-light window with arched lights. At right angles to the main structure is a rear wing with a six-light window and a corresponding window above on the first floor.

Inside, the housebody contains a bressumer and a fireplace with a flat arched lintel and moulded surround. The rear wing features a large basket arched fireplace with a moulded surround and a king post roof.
