Description

Kettlesnout is a house that dates from the mid 17th century but has been significantly altered in the mid 19th century and mid 20th century. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. The building has a two-storey front, with a single-storey aisle at the rear and a two-storey kitchen wing. It follows a three-room plan and includes a gabled porch. The quoins are a notable feature, although most of the windows have been altered. The porch is of particular interest, featuring a Tudor arched doorway with a cyma moulded surround and spandrels. The inner door has a Tudor arched lintel with a simple stop-chamfered surround. The gable is coped and has kneelers, with a finial at the apex. To the right of the porch, there is a string course above a large altered window with chamfered jambs, and a three-light chamfered mullioned window above it on the first floor. The sides and rear of the house are rendered. There is a two-light chamfered mullioned window in the rear aisle. The two-storey kitchen wing is set at right angles to the main range and has a coped gable with kneelers and a cat-slide roof over the side aisle. There is one additional stack. Inside, the building retains a spine beam made from reused timber, which may have come from a cruck building on the site, and features a distinct curve and mortice holes.
