Description

This is a house dating from 1618, with alterations and additions made in the 18th century. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone and has a stone slate roof. The house is two storeys high and has an L-shaped layout extending south. Originally designed with a three-room through-passage plan, it includes a projecting western cross-wing. This wing has a plinth, quoins, and a double-chamfered mullioned window with stepped ends, containing four over six lights. The return wall of the cross-wing features a double-chamfered mullioned and transomed window with a king mullion dividing twelve lights.

The hall range at a right angle incorporates a large, double-chamfered mullioned window comprising five long lights with a lowered sill. Above this is a three-light chamfered mullioned window, giving access to the upper floor. To the left of this is a two-light flat-faced mullioned window. The doorway to the through-passage has monolithic jambs, and is accompanied by a two-light flat-faced mullioned window above it, containing four lights.

The rear façade fronts the road and has a porch with a basket-arched lintel. This lintel has a finely moulded surround and carved shields, inscribed "16 IR18" set within two tressures. The porch has a flat roof and Gothic coping. Two bays project under separate gables, each featuring a tripartite window with a central glazed sash on each floor. There are three chimney stacks.

Inside the cross-wing, there are finely reeded floor joists and a spine beam featuring run-out stops. The closing truss to the hall contains a heavily cambered tie beam, which may be a reused cruck blade.
