Description
No. 76 on Stainland Road is a house that likely dates from the mid-17th century. It features rendered stonework and a stone slate roof, and is built over two storeys. The layout is a two-cell design with a gable entry. The house has chamfered mullioned windows, including three-light windows with the upper sections lacking mullions, as well as four-light and two-light windows, the latter being a fire-window. There is a three-light window above, also lacking mullions. At the rear, one chamfered mullioned window of two lights is preserved but blocked, while the others are flat-faced mullioned windows of two and three lights. The house has a gable stack and another stack.
Inside, the building retains a scarf-jointed spine beam and shows signs of a former bressumer with two posts on stylobates, though their purpose is unclear. The gable entry features a doorway with a timber door surround and a segmental lintel. There is a large tie beam, although the truss is not visible. It is possible that this structure was originally a timber-framed building that was later enclosed in stone during the 17th century.
