Description

Nelson House is a house, now unoccupied, likely built in the mid to late 17th century. It features thin coursed rubble with ashlar quoins and a stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high and has a U-shaped layout facing south, with a three-room plan and projecting cross-wings.

The eastern wing includes a two-storey porch with a catslide roof, leading into a central hall range. All windows are double chamfered mullioned. The western cross-wing has a prominent five-light window on the ground floor, with a similar window above it on the first floor. The right-hand return wall has a blocked single light window on the first floor. The hall range features a six-light window and a two-light fire-window for the housebody, along with a five-light window on the first floor.

The porch has quoined angles and a Tudor arched lintel, with composite jambs that have a stop chamfered surround forming spandrels. There is a similar inner doorway, which may be covered in render, and a two-light window above it on the first floor. The eastern wing has a window altered to three wide lights and a four-light window above on the first floor, which is the only window with cavetto chamfered mullions. The left-hand return wall, which is rendered, has a three-light window above an inserted doorway.

At the rear, there are three gables, with the eastern wing being blind. A Tudor arched doorway leads to a through passage, featuring a chamfered surround with a broach stop. Two parallel ranges project forward, with the rear of the hall range having double chamfered mullioned windows of two lights and a three-light window in the gable. A projecting rainwater chute is set between the gables. The west wing has five-light double chamfered mullioned windows on both floors and four stacks along the ridge, with one stack backing onto the through passage.
