Description

Woodlands is a house that has been divided into four flats. It was built in 1899, as indicated by the date on the rainwater heads. The building features punch-dressed, snecked stone with ashlar dressings and a stone slate roof. It is two storeys high and has quoins. The layout follows a hall-and-crosswings plan, with the garden front forming a U-shape and projecting gabled wings. The windows are double-chamfered mullioned types, with transoms on the ground floor. The wings include two-storey canted bay windows. The hall boasts a large 7 x 7-light window, with a 5-light window above it set under a scalloped parapet. The gables are coped and feature kneelers and finials. A tall stack with four coupled diamond-set flues is present, and the left-hand return wall has a tall external stack with deep offsets and coupled octagonal chimneys, located to the right of the original entrance. The entrance features a semicircular-arched doorway with a richly moulded stop-chamfered surround, flanked by Ionic pilasters and an entablature with a triangular pediment, which includes a tympanum with a heraldic shield. Above the entrance is a four-light window, and there is also a tall stack with three diamond-set flues.

Inside, the subdivision into flats has removed the original staircase, but oak pillars at the head of the stair remain, showcasing high-quality carvings of trees in different designs. Nearby is Roundwood Grange, dated 1898, which has a similar design, suggesting they were likely designed by the same architect.
