Description
The Church of St James is a church that was originally built in the mid to late 19th century and re-erected on its current site around 1905. It features a timber-framed structure with weatherboarding and a pantile roof. The building includes a nave and chancel that are continuously roofed, a north transceptal chapel, a south porch, and a short belfry tower at the west end. The church has five bays, which are marked by buttresses that extend from the principal rafters of the A-frame. Quatrefoils are set in the angles with the wall. The transcept and porch have simple gabled roofs, while the lateral windows are square-headed and plain. The east and west windows consist of four lights with traceried heads. The tower features three quatrefoils in the belfry and has a pyramidal roof topped with a gable cross.
Inside, the church has a single vessel with six internal bays supported by collar trusses. The truss at the junction with the chancel is arch-braced. There is a simple chancel screen with curved spandrels and quatrefoils infilling the uprights. The chancel roof is boarded, and the small transceptal chapel also has a boarded roof. It contains three windows with diamond panes and coloured glass. The church was originally erected at Great Warley in Essex and was given to its current location, along with the land for the site, by the Trustees of the late Reverend H. R. Bailey, who was the Rector of Warley. The church is a prominent feature in the landscape.
