Description
Langley House is a large house built in 1877, likely designed by John-Waige. It features brick and stucco construction with slate hipped roofs, showcasing an Italianate style. The entrance front has a central two-storey porch with a fluted Doric door surround topped by a pediment, and a pair of double doors with an overlight. Above the doors is a single cross window. To the left, there is a square bay with four plain sashes, topped by a balustrade, and above are two plain sashes in moulded surrounds. To the right, a canted bay contains four plain sashes, also topped by a balustrade, with a pair of plain sashes in a moulded surround above, topped by a large segmental pediment and an open pediment above that.
The garden front consists of eight bays, featuring an off-centre square bay with three plain sashes. To the left are two plain sashes, a projecting rusticated bay, and a single plain sash beyond, all with moulded surrounds. To the right, there are two similar sashes, followed by a projecting wing with a bow window containing three cross casements. Above this, there is a segment-headed sash, with three similar sashes to the right and two to the left, plus two more sashes in the projecting portion.
Inside, the house boasts an impressive staircase hall with elaborate plaster coving and a highly decorated panelled ceiling featuring stained glass. The staircase includes a single flight and a double flight, with a gallery on three sides, all adorned with bulbous balustrades and circular newels surrounded by brass lamps. The walls are fitted with dado panelling, good door surrounds, and fine doors. The main reception rooms on the ground floor exhibit high-quality detailing, including ornate plaster ceilings, dado panelling, fire surrounds, and overmantles. The dining room features a particularly fine fireplace with a fluted pilaster overmantle, pilasters on either side of the main bay windows, and folding doors that connect to the drawing room. The main bathroom is finished with fine tiles and includes an unusual shower unit.
