Description

Roundwood Grange is a house dated 1898, built with large coursed punch-dressed stone and ashlar dressings, topped with a stone slate roof. It is designed in a Vernacular Revival style and features a hall-and-crosswings plan with two and a half storeys.

The entrance front is U-shaped with projecting gabled wings. It has a plinth and a continuous string course. The windows are double-chamfered mullioned windows with almost square reveals. The north wing includes a lean-to on the ground floor, two 3-light windows on the first floor, and one in the attic. The hall, set back, features an elliptical-arched doorway with voussoirs and a moulded impost, the right side adorned with a ram's horn stop, and a richly moulded stop-chamfered surround, forming a shallow porch. The inner door has a square head with an expressed keystone. To the right of the hall is a 3-light mullioned and transomed window, with a single light and a 5-light window on the first floor. The south wing has a 5-light mullioned and transomed window, with another 5-light window above. The gables are coped with kneelers, lantern finials, and a parapet. The north wing has two triple-flued diamond-set stacks, while the south wing features one 6-flued diamond-set stack.

The garden front is also U-shaped, with wings that contain 7-light mullioned-and-transomed windows featuring two king mullions and 6-light windows above. The hall has a 5-light mullioned-and-transomed window, along with 6-light and single-light windows above. The porch, located within a buttress with the north wing, has an arrowslit window with stained glass. The right-hand return wall features a canted bay with a 2-light window, each side having a deep chamfer. Above this bay is a 2-light window. There is a rainwater chute to the right, complete with a dated rainwater head. Most windows are adorned with decorative leaded lights of varying designs. The interior has not been inspected.
