Description

Ambler Mill and Midland Mills Warehouses is a large mill complex built between 1871 and 1873, located on Cape Street in Bradford. This complex extends back to Valley Road. One of the warehouses and the chimney have been demolished. The Midland Mills were designed by Andrews and Pepper before their significant commission for Manningham Mills. The remaining warehouse and spinning mill are situated on either side of Cape Street, connected by a lodge at the second floor level.

The building is four storeys high, with the north block constructed of sandstone "brick" featuring ashlar dressings, while the south block is entirely made of ashlar. Architectural details include sill bands, modillion bracket eaves cornices, and parapets. The south range has a low rock-faced semi-basement and tall ground floor windows with aprons. The windows are closely set with ashlar lintels, and the ground floor windows are segmental arched. The south block consists of two sections: the return to Valley Road features a pediment-gable, and the slightly lower range facing Canal Road has a corner pavilion, with the parapet topped by iron scrolled cresting.
