Description
The Yorkshire County Savings Bank, built around 1840, was likely constructed alongside No 28 as a pair of town houses. This two-storey building has a rectangular plan and a symmetrical facade made of sandstone ashlar, featuring some Greek Revival detailing. The facade consists of six bays, with the central pair slightly projecting forward. It includes a plinth, a first-floor sill band, a deep frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course.
The central projection is highlighted by three pairs of Doric pilasters that define the first floor and the parapet above the cornice, with panelled dies. The outer pilasters are topped with corniced ashlar chimney stacks. There are incised panels above the window heads, and the revealed sash windows do not have glazing bars. The first-floor windows in the flanking bays have slightly battered eared architrave surrounds with panelled aprons.
On the central projection, there is a window to the right and a doorway to the left, both framed by broad architraves, bolection friezes, and dentilled cornices. The north and south fronts each have three bays with similar detailing, including Doric pilastered porches with disc friezes, cornices, and blocking courses. The south elevation features tripartite pilastered windows on the left side of the ground floor. This building is an unusual example of domestic architecture from this period in central Bradford.
