Description
Devonshire House, dated 1898, is a Grade II listed building located on North Parade. It features a sandstone ashlar block construction and has an asymmetrical front with three bays, comprising two storeys on the left and three storeys on the right, topped with a gable over the right-hand pair of bays. The architectural style is a blend of Jacobean and Arts and Crafts details, showcasing finely wrought masonry.
The front is enhanced by thin chamfered mullion-buttress strips that extend into a balustraded parapet above the two-storey section, which is capped by finials flanking the gable. A central mullion strip divides the right-hand windows and supports a carved corbel that holds a shallow serpentine balcony adorned with a wrought iron balustrade, positioned in front of the attic window. The ironwork features flat scrolled brackets. The building has mullioned transomed windows with small top lights, and the attic window is framed by mullion strips with a shallow ogee arch and finials above. The shallow arched doorway includes Arts and Crafts shallow carved decoration and lettering, with the date displayed in the name panel.
