Description
Whetley Mills, built in 1865, is a notable mill complex featuring two parallel blocks, with five storeys facing the road and six storeys at the rear. Designed by Milnes and France, it includes one of the finest remaining mill chimneys in Bradford. The building is constructed from sandstone "brick" with ashlar dressings. The long ranges have closely set ashlar lintel windows on sill bands, with round arches on the ground floor and a rusticated lower ground floor. The eaves cornices are decorated with mutules, and the roofs are slate with coped gable ends featuring oculi. The taller rear range has stair turrets at the east end and rests on a massive square plinth. Between the two ranges stands a very tall octagonal mill chimney made of sandstone "brick," which is capped with giant console brackets and a deep scalloped blocking course. To the right of the entrance gates, there is a lodge and a set-back two-storey office range that features archivolt segmental arched windows and an impost string, along with a deep bracketed eaves cornice.
