Description

The building consists of two three-storey blocks and a chimney stack belonging to Try Mills, part of the Thornton Spinning Company, located opposite number 244 and part of number 254 Thornton Road. It was constructed around 1850-1860 as a worsted mill. The block facing the road features three storeys, a basement, and an attic storey, built from sandstone "brick" with ashlar sill bands and spaced dentils along the eaves of a hipped slate roof. There are fifteen windows, closely set on the left side, with the second-floor windows featuring aprons and rounded arches. The attic storey has small square windows. The centre of the ground floor includes a semi-circular waggon arch with ashlar voussoirs. The rear block also has three storeys and a basement, displaying similar architectural details, and is topped with an octagonal, cornice-capped sandstone "brick" chimney.
