Description
New Beehive Inn
Public house built in 1901, designed by JH Cox. The building is constructed from stone with a slate roof.
The ground floor follows a double fronted, double pile plan with two rooms on either side of a central lobby. A south-east extension houses a modern kitchen, and the north rear room (Music Room) has been extended to the south-west. The upper storeys contain rooms opening from a central corridor. The cellar has been extended from beneath the tap room south-eastwards to form a large function room.
The principal elevation is symmetrical, composed of two wide bays with shaped gables either side of a narrow central bay. Each main bay contains recessed bow windows on the ground floor with three one-over-one sash windows separated by stone mullions. Storeys are divided by double string courses, the upper of which carries a datestone inscribed "1901" in a decorated panel and "NEW BEEHIVE INN" in large gold-coloured letters. Double front doors sit beneath a glass lantern over a semi-circular glazed door sign.
The rear elevation is plain, with two-light windows under plain stone lintels and cills. The gables here are undecorated rather than shaped, without string courses. A flat-roofed single-storey rendered extension contains a toilet block. The side elevations are plain with painted signage. The south-east extension is of stone with three fire-escape-type doors.
The pub centres on the drinking lobby, wood-panelled to lintel height and lit by wall-mounted gas mantles, with a serving hatch to the tap room bar.
To the right of the drinking lobby lies the Tap Room (saloon bar), containing the main bar counter running most of the room's length before curving to meet the wall. The counter is of oak, panelled underneath with an iron foot rail. Behind it stand arcaded display shelves of oak either side of an archway into the Music Room, with square-sectioned arcade posts and arched heads springing from square-sectioned urns. The display shelf rear is mirrored. A hatch allows drinks to be served in the drinking lobby. Leather upholstered bench seating runs around the walls, interrupted by a chimney breast with a fireplace under a segmental arch. Walls to door-lintel height and ceiling are covered in Lincrusta, and the floor is terrazzo. Gas mantles light the room. The Music Room behind contains few historic features.
To the left of the drinking lobby, the Commercial Room has a wood floor with leather upholstered seating around the walls and bell pushes above the seating. A cast-iron fireplace occupies the east wall. Wall-mounted gas mantles in drop-light fittings provide illumination. Behind it lies the Pink Room, wood-floored with leather upholstered seating separated into booths by wood and glass partitions. Bell pushes are fitted above the seating. A cast-iron register grate in a marble surround sits on the east wall, with wall-mounted gas mantles providing light.
The gents' toilet is accessed via a glazed rectangular tiled corridor from the Tap Room and Music Room. It features glazed rectangular tile walls and contains a glazed porcelain communal urinal with individual bays separated by thick ceramic partitions. The ladies' toilet, accessed from the hall behind the drinking lobby, contains few historic features.
The rear entrance opens into a back hall connected to the drinking lobby, stairwell and Music Room. The hallway combines terrazzo and wood flooring, with walls papered to dado height in Lincrusta similar to that in the Tap Room.
Ground-floor doors throughout follow a consistent pattern of nine glazed lights over two wooden panels with brass push plates.
The upper floors contain little historic interest beyond Lincrusta dados. The cellar bar contains little historic interest.
