Description
Barkerend Mills is a mid-19th century building that likely replaced an earlier cotton mill, converting it into a worsted mill. There are later 19th-century extensions along the road front. The long, six-storey façade is made of sandstone "brick" and features plain windows and a waggon entrance. At the rear, there is an earlier mid-19th century block that is also six storeys high, constructed of sandstone "brick" with 15 windows that have segmental heads above the lintels and sill bands. The eaves cornice is supported by spaced block brackets. The building has terminal stair turrets with an eaves cornice that projects forward. The north end includes a central hoist tower, and attached to the north-east corner is a chimney breast tower that rises above the eaves level, leading to an octagonal sandstone "brick" stack with a broached base.
