Description

Butler House is a late 18th century or circa 1800 refronting of a 17th century house located on Barkerend Road. The building features a wide, two-storey, symmetrical front with five windows, constructed from painted ashlar sandstone. It has plain paired brackets at the eaves of a stone slate roof, which has coped gable ends. The plain sash windows are topped with keyed painted lintels. The entrance boasts a well-crafted Doric pilaster doorway with a panelled door, a reeded doorhead, and a radial glazed semi-circular fanlight, all beneath a broken entablature and a well-proportioned open dentilled pediment. The rear elevation is made of 17th century sandstone rubble and, although it has been heightened and altered, it still retains a six-light renewed chamfered mullion window in a splayed reveal on the ground floor to the left. Butler House is one of the few houses from this period remaining in central Bradford.
