Description
Paper Hall is a substantial house built by William Rookes in 1643. It is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble and has a U-shaped plan, featuring two storeys and an attic, with a recessed centre and three-storey gabled wings. The left wing showcases large mullioned and transomed windows, including a West Riding gable window with four lower lights and two upper lights. The entrance has a moulded doorway with a four-centred arch set in a squared head, ornamental spandrels, and a lintel inscribed with the year 1643. The right wing was remodelled later in the 17th century and includes three lofty single mullion and transom windows. A continuous drip mould runs above the lower windows, leading to four triangular pediments, with gable windows similar to those in the left wing. The other elevations feature various mullioned windows. Although the interior has been largely altered, it retains arched stone fireplaces in the centre block on both the ground and first floors, as well as roof trusses in the centre block and east wing. These trusses include ties, yokes supporting short king posts, a ridge, and side purlins.
