Description
South Tunley Farmhouse is a house built in 1675, with alterations made in the 19th century. It is constructed from sandstone rubble and features a concrete tile roof, forming a half-H plan. The building has two storeys and a continuous plinth. The quoins display some tooling typical of the 19th century. Each cross-wing, consisting of one bay, has two-light windows with projecting moulded stone surrounds and flat-faced mullions. The recessed centre features a three-light mullioned window of 18th-century style on both floors, with redder sandstone around these windows indicating some rebuilding. To the right, there is a single-storey gabled porch with a chamfered doorway that has a canted head. Above the doorway, a stone is inscribed with '1675 RHM'. The chimneys, which have brick caps, are aligned with the doorway and on the ridge of the left-hand (south-west) cross-wing, the latter having two shafts linked by bricks placed diagonally. Inside, the central room includes a firehood bressumer and a heck that creates a baffle entry. The two axial beams feature quarter-round mouldings. The front room of the left-hand cross-wing contains some 17th-century panelling with scribed mouldings, including a fireplace surround inscribed with 'R-M 1676'. Other rooms have not been examined.
