Description
The Rookery is a house located in Dundry, originally built in the mid-17th century and later refaced and extended in the mid-18th and early 19th centuries. The structure is made of rubble with freestone dressings and features double Roman tile roofs. Originally designed in an L-shape, it has been extended to form a U-shape.
The building has two storeys and four windows, all of which are 20th-century casements. The entrance is an off-centre right four-panel door, which is sheltered by a flat hood supported by brackets. This door is flanked by two windows set in a moulded architrave that includes a keystone and cornice, with plain casements above and to the left. The roofline is finished with a plain coped parapet adorned with ball finials. The house is flanked by terrace walls that feature chamfered doorways leading down to piers with ball finials.
At the rear, there is a three-light ovolo-moulded mullion window that serves the staircase, along with a six-panel door beneath a flat hood supported by corbels. A similar two-light window is found in the rear wing of the original L-plan, which also features a large end stack. Inside, the property boasts a massive inglenook fireplace with a chamfered, cambered lintel, a mantelshelf supported by brackets, and a spit mechanism. There is also a two-tier spice cupboard, chamfered door frames, a staircase with splat balusters, and the front right room includes a shell niche display cupboard.
