Description

Rookers (or Rookery) Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the mid to late 16th century, with alterations made in the mid-17th and 18th centuries. It features rubble stone walls and a thatched roof that is hipped at the right end. The building has one brick stack in the front wing and one stone stack in the rear wing. It is one storey high with an attic and has an L-shaped plan, consisting of a front range that follows a three-room and cross-passage layout, possibly originating from a long-house design.

The entrance door leads into the cross-passage and has a carved stone round-arched head, with a coat of arms above it that is dated 1663. The ground floor includes three casement windows with a central glazing bar, while the attic has four half-dormers with similar casements. The rear kitchen wing is of similar construction and date.

At the right end of the front range, there is a 20th-century brick extension that is single-storeyed and has a patent tile roof. At the left end, there is a stone lean-to extension with a corrugated asbestos roof. Inside, the left room on the ground floor features a deep chamfered ceiling beam, with similar beams found in the cross-passage. The kitchen in the rear wing has a very large open fireplace with a timber lintel, which may indicate it was used as a curing chamber, along with a deep chamfered ceiling beam. At the rear of the kitchen, there is a cross-passage leading to a former brewhouse. Attached to the main building is a cowshed range, which has rubble stone walls and a patent tile roof.
