Description

Barkerend School is a board school dating to 1873, designed by Milnes & France of Bradford for the Bradford School Board. Subsequent additions were made in 1878, 1882, and 1885. The building is constructed of coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings, featuring gabled and hipped slate roofs topped by two prominent ridge stacks with clustered round shafts. The design is in the Early English Gothic style, with minor alterations in the 20th century.

The front elevation presents a main range with upper and lower halls arranged end-to-end, parallel to the street, complemented by a T-plan central rear range. A buttress flanks a central four-light window, and projecting gables on either side showcase pointed arched windows with a round upper light containing plate tracery. The upper hall has five bays with five two-light windows and three buttresses, while the lower hall mirrors this fenestration. Projecting entrance blocks flank both ends, featuring cross-mullioned and two-light windows. The right return displays a triple-chamfered pointed arched doorway and a flat-headed window, while the left return incorporates a similar window.

The rear elevation reveals a central gable with two three-light pointed arched windows, one partially covered by a lean-to porch. Hipped bays flank the main rear wing, each topped with a gabled through-eaves dormer housing a four-light window. Short parallel rear ranges extend from each end of the main range, exhibiting various window arrangements, pointed arched doorways, and hipped projections. The left gable features a cross-mullioned pointed arched window with four lights.

Internally, the upper hall has an arch-braced roof supported by corbels, now covered by a 20th-century ceiling. Pointed arched openings provide access to classrooms, some of which retain glazed screens. Original exposed trusses and matchboard ceilings are visible in a cloakroom and classroom within the rear wing and a storeroom, alongside a moulded stone fireplace.

To the outside, a rock-faced stone boundary wall with stepped gabled coping encloses the site. A playshed with cast iron columns is integrated into the left return, and the front features two pairs of octagonal stone gatepiers topped with pinnacles. The wall's front and left return have chamfered coping, with some original railing remaining on the left return.
