Description
Carlton-Bolling School is a Board School dating to 1897, designed by CM Hargreaves for the Bradford School Board. Minor alterations and additions occurred in the 20th century. Constructed from rockfaced stone with ashlar dressings, it features gabled and hipped slate roofs. The architectural style is Renaissance Revival.
The building has a rusticated basement, sill bands, eaves cornice, and coped gables. It is two storeys plus a basement and attics, with a ten-window front arranged 2:6:2. The main front has slightly projecting wings at each end, each containing two openings on each floor. Basement openings have been fitted with 20th-century glazed screens. The first and second floors retain original glazing bar windows. A cornice and round pediment adorn the central pair of windows on the second floor. The attic central bay contains two round arched glazing bar windows flanked by pilasters, beneath a shaped gable with a plaque and ball finials. Late 20th-century cross-mullioned windows are located in the left and right end bays; the left end bay includes a cross-mullioned panel inscribed "Hanson Board School". A central square bell turret with a pyramidal roof and wind vane rises from the roof.
The entrance front, on the right return, features a slightly projecting gabled bay with a square projection, two storeys in height, containing a single basement opening and two first-floor windows under a hipped roof. Above this are two transomed windows, followed by a stepped cross-mullioned window, four lights, reglazed in the late 20th century. To the right is a square projection with a flat roof and parapet, housing two glazed basement openings and two windows above, the left openings being smaller. To the left of this is a projecting ashlar doorcase with a rusticated round arched doorway and overlight, sheltered by a segmental pediment on brackets. Further to the left are a doorway and a glazed basement opening, above which are two round arched windows. The upper floors feature transomed windows, with those in the attics reglazed in the late 20th century.
The left return displays a similar central doorcase with a cornice, a basement opening to the left, and a glazed wooden porch under a hipped roof. The first and second floors have four windows each. The attics have a large gabled through-eaves dormer on brackets to the right, and two smaller windows to the left; all are reglazed in the late 20th century. The rear elevation is characterized by a central hipped bay flanked by pairs of gabled bays, with the outer bays recessed, and generally retains its original fenestration and glazing.
The interior features an enriched wrought iron balustrade on the main staircase. The upper floor halls showcase exposed steel cross-beams, round-arched openings, glazed screens and doors. Classrooms also feature similar cross beams, matchboard dadoes, and fitted blackboards, with some including 19th-century glazed screens.
