Description
The Church of St Clement, built between 1892 and 1894 by E P Warren, is a Grade II* listed building located on Barkerend Road. This church is constructed from dressed sandstone and features restrained Decorated architectural details. It consists of a nave, low aisles, and a chancel, with an octagonal, crenellated turret at the north-west corner topped with a spirelet. The church is raised on a terrace at the west end, accessible by a double flight of steps.
A notable aspect of the church is the internal decoration of the east end, created by Morris & Co. This includes large painted gesso angels in the spandrels of the chancel aisle and a painted chancel roof, both designed by Edward Burne-Jones between 1900 and 1901. Large paintings by W M Palin from 1898 flank the altar, and the reredos features mosaic work by Salviati of Venice. The stained glass, dating from 1900, was made by C E Kempe.
