Description

Drummond's Mill, built in 1861 by the architects Lockwood and Mawson, features a main block that includes a three-storey warehouse, a five-storey spinning mill, and a spinning shed. The design is a more restrained interpretation of Italianate style compared to the earlier Saltaire Mills. The large, five-storey spinning mill is constructed of sandstone "brick" with ashlar dressings. It has broad pedimented gable ends and a projecting eaves cornice supported by console brackets. There are 26 closely set windows along the side ranges, each with sill bands on every floor. Originally, there were projecting stair turrets on both the north and south fronts, featuring arched lights on each floor and topped with twin arched belvederes that have pyramid roofs and iron crested spike finials; however, the turrets on the Lumb Lane side have been removed. The building is fireproof, utilizing cast iron pillars and double skin floors, while the slate roof is supported by a sophisticated system of laminated elliptical arched timber trusses.

The three-storey sandstone "brick" warehouse at the front on Lumb Lane has pedimented gable ends, with a taller pediment gable section on the right. It also features console bracketed eaves and closely set windows on sill bands. A spinning shed block connects this warehouse to the five-storey block, which has a link to the south leading to the engine house. The engine house is three storeys high, with flat arched windows and a stone slate roof. At its eastern end stands the chimney stack, regarded as one of the finest mill chimneys in Bradford, characterized by its tall, slender octagonal shaft rising from a square plinth, topped with a console bracketed crown.
