Description

The Gate House and the three-storey block to the right, fronting the road at number 224 (Weber, Cook and Garnham Limited), were built as the Oakwood Dyeworks in 1861, designed by architect Eli Milnes. The gatehouse features a prominent Italianate style made of sandstone ashlar. It includes a short four-storey tower topped with a pyramidal roof and a louvred bell stage. The design incorporates string courses, quoins, and a plinth, along with narrow round-headed windows. To the right, there is a two-storey, three-bay screen that contains a large gateway with a semi-circular voussoir. The three-storey block extending eastward has had its parapet rebuilt in sandstone "brick." The ground floor showcases cyclopean rustication, rusticated quoins, plat bands, and a roll band, while the upper floors are adorned with panelled quoin pilasters.
