Description

29 Canal Road is a Grade II listed building, dating from around 1870 to 1874. It is an intact warehouse and office block that is closely related in design to Nos 16 and 18, also designed by Milnes and France. The building is four storeys high with an ashlar front facing Mill Street. The ground floor features rusticated quoin pilasters, while the upper floors have coupled segmental-headed windows, lacking the foliate bands found on Nos 16 and 18.

At the centre, there are paired doorways set in linked rusticated, chamfered surrounds, complete with impost mouldings and keystones, leading to double panelled doors topped with semi-circular fanlights. A cornice serves as the first-floor sill course, with sill bands on the upper floors and large block brackets supporting a bold eaves cornice. The upper floors have paired outer windows, flat arches on the first and second floors, and segmental arches on the third floor with projecting heads.

The warehouse block retains its full depth, connecting seamlessly with No 29 Canal Road in one long range. The long, plain side elevations feature continuous sill bands across 35 windows on each floor, including superimposed hatches at three points, and block brackets at the eaves. There is a blocked semi-circular archway with ashlar voussoirs stepped to the keystone near the Canal Road end on the Holdsworth Street elevation.

The elevation of No 29 Canal Road is also ashlar faced, with a bevelled corner at Holdsworth Road. A cornice above the ground floor acts as the first-floor sill course, with sill bands on the three upper floors, supported by grooved quoin pilasters and the rusticated bevelled corner. The seven-window front has two slight breaks; the outer windows are coupled, with single windows at the breaks and three grouped in the centre. The ground floor features grooved rustication, with round-headed doorways at the breaks where the rustication is struck into the arches. The first-floor windows in the breaks are highlighted by panelled flanking strips and carved consoles supporting cornices above, while the second-floor windows have plain cornices and the third-floor windows are framed with eared architraves. The other windows are plain. The stone bracket eaves cornice and a broad bracket corniced chimney sit above the bevelled corner.
