Description
Nos 18 and 20 Canal Road is a warehouse built around 1870, located on a wedge-shaped site at the junction with Balme Street. The building is six storeys tall with a basement, constructed from sandstone "brick" featuring roughly dressed vermiculated stonework at the basement and ground floor levels. Architectural details include a cornice at the ground floor, a sill band on the second floor, a bracket cornice above the fourth floor, and a shallow eaves cornice. The facade has a long range of plain lintelled windows. The narrow, levelled south corner is faced with ashlar stone up to the first floor and has rusticated quoins. There are paired windows with a pediment above the doorway, which features rustication struck into the fanlight arch. The top floor of the corner includes a lunette window with a pediment rising above it. This building occupies an important corner site.
