Description

Nos 16 and 18 Mill Street are a warehouse and offices dating to around 1870-74, designed as a unified pair of buildings. The architects were Milnes and France. The building is four storeys high and constructed of ashlar stone, exhibiting well-balanced proportions and Italianate detailing. A blind basement is present on the ground floor. The central entrance features panelled doors with shaped heads and rectangular fanlights, flanked by and divided by rusticated piers and broader rusticated quoin pilasters. The ground floor has coupled windows, recessed for one order with foliate carved bands to the heads. A moulded cornice extends across as the first-floor sill course, with a sill band to the second floor and block sills on consoles to the third floor. The upper-floor windows mirror the ground-floor openings, with paired windows; the outer windows have chamfered dividing mullions on the first and second floors, and cambered arches on the first floor. The eaves cornice is similar to that of No 14, with a bed mould to the console brackets. The side elevation is comparable to No 14, with eleven closely spaced windows. The rear half of the building has been demolished, but a tall ashlar stack with a frieze and cornice remains above the eaves, positioned over the eleventh bay.
