Description
The Cathedral Church of St Peter is located on Church Bank in Bradford. Originally a parish church, it was designated as a cathedral in 1919 and later extended by Sir Edward Maufe after 1945 to the east end and to the north of the west tower. The building showcases the characteristics of a 15th century Yorkshire church, constructed from coursed gritstone. It features a west tower with prominent Perpendicular detailing dating from 1493 to 1508, alongside a destroyed nave and aisles that include battlements from around 1430 to 1458. The windows are of the Perpendicular style. The nave arcades are from the 14th century, having been rebuilt after a fire in 1327. The Bolling Chapel, located south of the original chancel, had its windows modified in 1666. The transept chapels were added in 1899. The south aisle, clerestory, and porch were reconstructed in 1832-33 and further remodeled during the restoration in the 1890s. Notable furnishings include a baldecohino designed by Maufe at the west end and a fine spired late Gothic font cover. The original chancel features early work from 1862 by Morris and Co, designed by F M Brown, Rossetti, and Burne-Jones, with additional stained glass by Kempe from 1899 to 1900. The church also houses impressive monuments, including works by Scheemaker and Flaxman.
