Description
Dewhurst's Mill is a late 19th-century cotton spinning and weaving mill, constructed between 1867 and 1870. It comprises a main rectangular western block, an eastern range, a third mill, and a water tower; all forming a substantial group. The western block is built of coursed stone with rusticated quoins and has a hipped slate roof with glazed skylights set beneath bracketed eaves. It features 20 windows on each of its five floors facing the road, with an additional six windows on the return end. Dentilled string courses are located at the sill levels of the first and third floors. A rusticated, pyramid-capped gate pier marks the main entrance on the east side. The north-east water tower, part of the western block, has a hipped roof and an iron belvedere with a bracketed cornice. The third mill, situated to the east of Brewery Lane, is a four-story structure of seven bays, with a water tower in its north-west corner and a bracketed cornice. The eastern range, shaped and facing Broughton Road, has five-story gable ends with three round-headed windows in the gable apex, and ten-by-fifteen bay elevations to the courtyard. Inclined cast iron bridges with enriched round-headed glazing connect the eastern range across Brewery Lane to a third mill.
