Baker'S Mill

Baker's Mill is a late 19th-century industrial complex situated north-east of an enclosed courtyard, located between Prentice Street and Bolton Street in Lavenham. The mill buildings consist of a two-storey red brick wing at the north end, rising to three storeys with a projecting timber loft-hoist, and a main block set at a right angle to the wing, providing a visual end to the entrance from Prentice Street.

The Prentice Street frontage is gabled, featuring a raised brick band and corner pilasters. It has one window range of double-hung sashes with glazing bars. The main block is designed in an Italian Romanesque style, with four window ranges on the north and south fronts (both of similar design), and two on the west front. These windows are casements with glazing bars, set in chamfered reveals, with stone cills and shallow brick apron courses. Ground and first-storey windows have segmental brick arches, while second-storey windows have flat brick arches. The windows are arranged in pairs, set in recessed panels topped by a serrated brick dentil course, and with a grey brick decorative band between the first and second storeys. The gable is decorated with shaped brick pendants and features a central round-headed window with a moulded brick hood course at second-storey level, along with two grey brick decorative bands running between storeys. The facades are framed by chamfered brick pilasters and a raised plinth. A semi-circular brick arched doorway on the north front has a stone tympanum inscribed "Built by J W and F W Baker" and a monogram. The roof is slate.
