Description
Victoria Mill is a large, double-cotton spinning mill situated on Lower Vickers Street, Miles Platting, Manchester, constructed in two phases in 1869 and 1873. Designed by George Woodhouse for William Holland, it is built of red brick with yellow brick dressings, and likely has a slate roof. The structure incorporates fire-resistant internal elements.
The mill is arranged in a U-plan, consisting of two large rectangular spinning mills connected by a central engine house. A symmetrical design is centered around a stair turret wrapped around a chimney. The engine house was rebuilt in 1902 when it was converted to a rope drive, and a boiler house is located to the rear, within a courtyard set between the two mill ranges. A three-window central block faces the street; the left-hand range features a partially blocked round-arched window marking the former internal engine house, while the right-hand range is obscured by a brick shaft added in 1920.
Each spinning mill is a 6-storey, 11x10 bay block, featuring stressed angle pilasters extended as privy towers to the north elevation. Italianate detailing is evident in the segmentally headed windows on the first five storeys, and coupled round-headed windows on the top storey, all arcaded with shafts and a continuous sill band. Two-window towers, appearing to be later additions, are located towards the center of each mill.
The internal construction almost certainly employs transverse brick arches supported by cast iron columns. Ancillary buildings remain to the northwest of the site. Previously existing blowing rooms, offices, and an ancillary building range to the southeast have been removed.
Victoria Mill is exceptionally large for its architectural period and uses a distinctive industrial architectural vocabulary, notably in the design combining the stair tower and chimney. It represents an excellent example of the development of a distinctly industrial architectural style and the work of George Woodhouse.
