Description
The gates and railings at the main entrance of Philips Park Cemetery were constructed in 1867 by Paull and Ayliffe. They are made of sandstone and wrought iron. The central gate pier is large and designed like a splay-footed spire on a square base, featuring marble corner shafts that end in small pinnacles, with crockets on the spire and an apex cross. There are two pairs of smaller square outer piers topped with pyramidal caps, which are connected by walls made of coursed sandstone rubble. The wrought-iron gates include three bands of fleur-de-lys within circles, while the railings are decorated with trefoil-headed panels.
