Description
Ashton Canal Lock Number 6 is a canal lock built between 1792 and 1799 for the Manchester and Ashton-under-Lyne Canal Company. It has been renovated and features large blocks of millstone grit along with some red brick and wooden gates. This narrow lock has a chamber that is 7 feet wide and includes a covered overflow channel on the south side. Stone staircases flank the lower entry at the west end, and there is an extended bullnose at the top end of the island. This lock is the fourth in a series of 13 similar locks, all of which are in working order.
